Throughout history, pets have held a special place in human lives, and a few of them have even become legendary. These animals were companions to emperors, presidents, and other historical figures, and some even influenced the course of history. Here are a few famous pets that have left their mark on the world.

Hachiko, the Loyal Akita

Hachiko, an Akita dog from Japan, is a symbol of loyalty and devotion. His story begins in the 1920s when he was adopted by Professor Hidesaburo Ueno. Each day, Hachiko would accompany his owner to the Shibuya train station in Tokyo and wait there for his return. Tragically, Ueno passed away suddenly at work in 1925, but Hachiko continued to wait at the station every evening for nearly 10 years. His loyalty deeply touched the Japanese people, who eventually erected a bronze statue in his honor at Shibuya Station. Today, Hachiko’s story continues to inspire people around the world as an example of loyalty and love. More on Hachiko may be found here.

Laika, the Space Dog

Laika, a stray dog from the streets of Moscow, was selected by Soviet scientists to become the first animal to orbit Earth. On November 3, 1957, Laika was launched aboard Sputnik 2, making her the first living being to journey into space. Her mission was a one-way trip, as there were no plans for her return. While the mission ultimately ended in her death, Laika became an international symbol of courage and the sacrifices made for scientific progress. Her journey contributed to future space missions and the eventual human exploration of space. The Smithsonian has a good article on Laika.

Seaman, the Newfoundland on the Lewis and Clark Expedition

Seaman, a Newfoundland dog, accompanied explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on their historic expedition to explore the American West from 1804 to 1806. He proved invaluable as both a loyal companion and a working member of the team. Seaman helped with hunting and even protected the crew from a wild animal attack. His loyalty and bravery earned him a special place in American history, and he remains celebrated as an integral part of the expedition’s success.

Trim, the Sailing Cat

Trim was a black-and-white cat who accompanied British navigator Matthew Flinders on his 1801 circumnavigation of Australia. Known for his resilience and curiosity, Trim quickly became a beloved member of the crew, even earning his own seat at meals. Flinders grew so fond of Trim that he wrote a memoir about the cat, describing him as his “faithful friend.” Trim’s story is still celebrated in Australia, where statues and plaques honor this adventurous feline.

Ham the Astrochimp

Ham, a chimpanzee, was the first hominid launched into space by NASA in 1961 as part of the Mercury-Redstone mission. Ham’s mission was to prove that living beings could survive in space and perform tasks. His successful flight paved the way for human space exploration, and he returned safely to Earth, becoming a national hero. Ham lived out his years in a zoo, where he continued to captivate visitors and is remembered for his pioneering contribution to space science.]

Nero’s Horse Incitatus

Roman Emperor Caligula had a special relationship with his horse, Incitatus, even going so far as to make him a priest and allegedly planning to make him a senator. While historians debate whether these stories are exaggerated, Incitatus’s fame lives on as a symbol of the Roman emperor’s eccentricity and absolute power. Whether real or apocryphal, Incitatus remains one of the most famous animals in ancient history.

From symbols of loyalty to pioneers of space travel, these famous pets show the extraordinary impact that animals have had throughout history. They have become icons in their own right, each leaving a legacy that has shaped cultural and historical narratives.

Toto

Terry was a female Cairn Terrier performer who appeared in many different movies, most famously as Toto in the film The Wizard of Oz. It was her only credited role, though she was credited not as Terry but as Toto, and because of the role’s popularity her name was officially changed to Toto in 1942.
