One fully equipped van. One highly experienced groomer. A vision born out of frustration. That’s how Bernadette Coleman started Primped Pooches in 2020.
BACKGROUND
Many pet parents find the grooming experience to be frustrating and inconvenient, as did Bernadette. She was stressing herself out when she took her dogs to get groomed. “There HAS to be a better way!” she would say to herself. She decided to build something that combined high-quality grooming with top-tier customer service. Her background in marketing, business, and operations was invaluable. The proverbial “icing on the cake” was her love of pets. Ask Bernadette why she decided on mobile grooming instead of opening a storefront salon and she will tell you it just “makes sense.” Mobile grooming “eliminates cages, reduces pet anxiety, and gives owners the convenience of doorstep service. I knew that if this was something I needed and wanted, other people needed it and wanted it too. I thought there had to be a growing demand for personalized, stress-free grooming, and I wanted to build a business model that centered on comfort, safety, and ease.”
PET CARE and SERVICES
While Primped Pooches does groom cats, it focuses on dogs and accepts most breeds. They offer full grooming packages, nail trimming, de-shedding, teeth brushing, and even fun add-ons like pet-safe dye for ears, tails, or paws, just to add a bit of color.
What makes Primed Pooches unique? Each pet receives one-on-one attention in a quiet, clean, mobile environment. There are no cages and no waiting.
How is a nervous or aggressive pet groomed? Primped Pooches groomers are trained in low-stress handling techniques and work at a pace that respects the pet’s comfort. If a dog is especially anxious or reactive, shorter sessions or referrals to a vet-groomer partnership may be recommended.
CHALLENGES and REWARDS
What does Bernadette enjoy the most about owning Primped Pooches? Building relationships—with clients, groomers, and pets. “It’s incredibly rewarding to run a business that brings joy and peace of mind to pet owners and gives animals a calmer grooming experience”, she shared.
One challenge that Bernadette shared is logistics. Logistics can be tricky—weather, traffic, and vehicle maintenance all come into play. Route planning requires efficiency.
CLIENT EDUCATION AND ADVICE
Bernadette recommends grooming every 4–6 weeks, depending on the breed and coat type. Regular grooming prevents matting, skin issues, and overgrown nails—and keeps a pet healthy and comfortable. What is a common grooming mistake pet owners make? Waiting too long between grooms or not brushing between appointments, especially with doodles or long-haired breeds. When a client has waited too long, often they become upset when the dog or cat must be shaved because they become so matted. In addition, it’s important to keep nails trimmed and ears clean.
What should a pet owner look for when choosing a groomer? Bernadette’s advises to “look for professionalism, experience, cleanliness, and genuine care for animals. Ask about certifications, reviews, and what their grooming environment is like. A good groomer will be transparent and attentive to your pet’s needs. If you find a good groomer that your pet likes, get on a regular schedule.” Clients who auto-book with Primped Pooches receive 10% off every groom.
